This month I want to spotlight one of the DJ’s core skills – mixing.

What is mixing?

Have you ever been to a party where the DJ just stops and starts tracks? No fades, no blends, just end of one track, start the next track. No thought to music styles going together or even track speeds… fast rock into slow ballads, pop into reggae… just press play. How did it feel? Unfortunately, there are quite a few DJs still around who use this method for their entire set. They play a “banger”, everyone’s on the dancefloor, this is great, then it gets to the end of the track and on comes a slow romantic ballad, the dancefloor empties via one couple. You go to the bar and get a drink, and chat with friends. A few tracks later, and on comes another “banger”, you grab your friends and head to the dancefloor, it’s packed, it’s great again. Then, the next track comes on – it’s an obscure track from the 70’s… the dancefloor empties… this happens a few times and then the dancefloor stops filling, people don’t bother to get up, they sit at the bar and chat. The evening fizzles out early, and everyone drifts off. You must have been there? Not what you want at your wedding? There is a much better way…

Why does a DJ mix?

Mixing is more than just a technical skill; it is a significant form of artistic expression for a DJ. When a DJ mixes, they bring together diverse musical elements, creating a unique soundscape that captivates the audience. This process involves selecting songs that not only fit together rhythmically but also complement each other melodically. This all starts with conversations about the type of music you, your family and your friends love to dance to. Note, I said dance to not music you like. If your vision of your wedding reception is a packed dancefloor with everyone dancing, you need a mix DJ.

My experience

I’ve had a love of music of all styles and genres forever and have been DJ’ing for many years and have a wealth of experience, but I also strive to continue learn and improve my skills. A few years back, I attended multiple training sessions at On the Rise DJ Academy, London to “push” my skills and be the best I could be. I also buy music tracks that lend themselves to mixing and remixed dance versions of popular songs.
